It's all thanks to Sandra Pressdee

Thank You

As an ex-Guider and ex-district Commissioner for South Gower, I am reminded of the first time I met Sandra Pressdee, when her young daughters, Amy and Katie joined 1st Bishopston Brownies. Very soon, she too became involved, especially with Dathliad (celebration of 75 years of Guiding), when her gifting with Craft came to the fore and her capacity to encourage Brownies and young people generally.

Over the years that followed, Sandra has continued to support and encourage Guiding by being a Guider herself - but her commitment to Guiding in Bishopston goes much further and deeper than could be possibly expected.

Nora Peacock and then Marian Booth were the two Guiders who tirelessly kept Providence going over many years and in time the mantle was taken up by Sandra.

Providence initially was leased to Bishopston Guiding and in 1993, the then owners give it "As a Deed of Gift" to Guiding in Bishopston. By then Providence was sadly in need of repair and up-dating and it was Sandra who nobly spear-headed all that has been done over the ensuing years. You only have to read the accounts in "Memories" to see what has been done to Providence and achieved, primarily through Sandra's hard work, enthusiasm and commitment to it all.

The Providence 200 D.V.D. was Sandra's brain-child too and that has been a huge success. The Web page that was formed and is still being added to, is testimony to the interest that people have shown, not only to Providence, but to Bishopston and it's social history.

So ... although Sandra would not want or seek any thanks for all she has done, nevertheless an "Enormous Thank You" is necessary for all that she has done over many years for Providence and the Guiding community.

Providence200’s  Heritage Lottery grant enabled us to set up this web page .  It gives a unique look at the heritage of  Providence Chapel and of Bishopston and Murton villages.

With renewed energy (and a little training) we’re ready to update the Providence200 website this autumn.  We hope to add a large section relating to Guiding in the village – it’s the centenary of Girl Guiding this year;  a section on The Lamplighter has been added already, and we hope soon to be able to put captions to the photos – though that will spoil the fun many of our ‘readers’ have had trying to place faces from decades ago!  Watch this space.

For further information or to share your memories, photographs or anecdotes which will surely be of interest to others, do contact Sandra Pressdee, tel. 01792 232400.   We’d be very happy to accept more items for the site.

Latest Addition

We have two new items :  One is an article which appeared in the Herald of Wales in April 1932  under the name of 'Lavengro', which gives us an idea of the state of Providence Chapel at that time.      The other is a fascinating insight into the daily life of  an oysterfishrman in 1864:  Mr John Timothy lived in Pwlldu and his diary has survived - thanks to Mrs P Durrant.

The History of the Lamplighter in Bishopston is now on the site and very shortly we will add a large section on Guiding and Providence.
